Luther often spent time in the trading city of Leipzig, whether en route elsewhere, during the famous Leipzig Disputation in 1519 or at the start of the Reformation in 1539. He had friends and supporters here, such as Professor of Medicine Heinrich Stromer von Auerbach and printer Melchior Lotter. Numerous Lutheran writings were published and distributed in Leipzig, making it a city of crucial importance for the dissemination of Reformation ideas.
