In Luther’s day, this restaurant was owned by Heinrich Stromer von Auerbach, a friend and supporter of the reformer. When Luther was travelling incognito from Wartburg Castle to Wittenberg in 1521 – having been excommunicated and outlawed – he spent a night at Stromer’s home, undetected. In later years, Goethe also spent time here and found inspiration for a famous scene in his play “Faust”.
