Pleissenburg Castle was the scene of the “Leipzig Disputation”, a fierce debate between Luther and theology professor Johannes Eck, a supporter of the Pope, in the summer of 1519. When Duke Henry the Pious introduced the Reformation in 1539, Luther was once again invited to Leipzig and preached in the chapel at Pleissenburg Castle. The castle was destroyed in 1547, and in 1905 the imposing New City Hall was built on its foundations.
